| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’article porte sur la crise d’identité du parti démocrate dans les années 2000. Depuis plus de quarante ans le parti démocrate cherche à établir une coalition électorale qui lui redonnerait la surface nationale perdue avec le basculement du Sud dans le camp républicain. Cette crise a été particulièrement visible au cours des deux mandats de la présidence Bush : les attentats du 11 Septembre ont permis aux républicains de s’approprier les notions de patriotisme et de sécurité. Les démocrates, en revanche, sont en position réactive par rapport aux initiatives du Grand Old Party ( GOP). Ils hésitent non seulement sur leur tactique électorale mais aussi sur leur ligne idéologique. La résolution de ces problèmes de leadership permettrait au parti de l’âne de bénéficier à plein de la crise de la classe moyenne qui est sans doute l’évolution sociale la plus clairement favorable aux démocrates dans l’optique de la présidentielle de 2008. |

| Summary, etc. | The paper deals with the identity crisis plaguing the Democratic Party in the 2000s. Over the past forty years, the Democratic Party has been trying to recover from the loss of the South to the Republicans by establishing a national electoral coalition. This crisis was highly visible during the two terms of George W. Bush. The 09/11 attacks made it possible for Republicans to hijack patriotic values as well as the safety issue. Democrats are merely reacting to Republican moves. They are unsure about both their electoral tactics and their core values. If they ever come up with a solution to these leadership issues, however, they would be in a position to fully benefit from the middle class crisis, which is certainly the social evolution most clearly favorable to Democrats with the 2008 presidential election on the horizon. |
