| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa dimension religieuse dans l’Italie d’aujourd’hui est encore caractérisée par la présence hégémonique de l’Église catholique, ce qui offre l’opportunité d’examiner les métamorphoses du catholicisme pendant les cinquante dernières années. Trois phases peuvent être envisagées. Premièrement, l’aspiration à la reconstruction d’un ordre social chrétien et d’un État catholique et l’échec de cette perspective ; deuxièmement, le vain effort d’un renouveau religieux sous la direction de Paul VI, qui chercha à transformer un catholicisme italien largement pratiqué par conformisme social en une attitude de foi fondée, à un niveau individuel, sur une solide formation spirituelle et capable, à un niveau collectif, de contribuer à l’amélioration de la vie sociale ; troisièmement, l’élaboration, sous l’impulsion de Jean Paul II, d’un projet de néochrétienté qui, en soulignant les caractères identitaires du catholicisme pour la nation italienne, réclame un nouveau rôle public pour l’institution ecclésiastique en tant que dépositaire des droits de l’homme devant structurer la communauté politique. Dans les métamorphoses du catholicisme italien, bien réelles, on constate ainsi des éléments de continuité. |

| Summary, etc. | The religious dimension in Italy today is still characterized by the hegemonic presence of the Catholic Church, which provides the opportunity of examining the metamorphoses of Catholicism over the last fifty years. There are three phases: first, the hope for the reconstruction of a christian social order and of a catholic State and the failure of this possibility; second, the unsuccessful effort of a religious renewal under Paul VI, who tried to transform Italian catholicism largely characterized by social conformism in an attitude of faith founded, on the individual level, on a solid spiritual formation, and able, on a collective level, to contribute to the improvement of social life; thirdly, the elaboration, under Jean-Paul II, of a neochristian project that, while emphasizing the identity of catholicism for the Italian nation, demanded a new public role for the ecclesiastic institution as depositary of human rights that have to structure a political community. |
