| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The study of religion in Italy reveals a country far removed from France and even of other European countries: social presence, dynamism of commitment, strength of popular practices, political role of the Catholic Church promote a singularity that first surprises the observer. This is confirmed when one analyzes more closely the daily realities and deeper tendencies of change. The long history of christianism since the martyrs of Peter and Paul gave Italy a particular relation to religion in spite of the vicissitudes of the construction of the national State imposed on the Church and the progress of society’s secularization. Rome capital of the Italian state and capital of catholicity imposes a profoundly original relation between Church and State, a relation regulated by the concordat regime integrated into the republican Constitution but that goes beyond the juridical rules to create, not without some tensions, a sort of osmosis between spiritual and temporal. |
