| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This article examines the construction of the ethnonational boundaries that cut across the Israeli State since its foundation, based on an analysis of the establishment of its educational system between 1947 and 1953. The debates and conflicts of these years shed light on the crucial role educational segregation between Jewish and Arab pupils plays, not only in the exclusion and control of the Arab minority, but also in the State’s endeavor to unify a Jewish society facing massive immigration. Paradoxically enough, School, which was conceived by the Zionist founding fathers as the “melting pot” where the new national identity must develop, is the locus where the ethnicisation of Israeli social relations takes place. This process crystallizes the ethnonational divide between Jews and Arabs, as well as between Jews themselves of Ashkenazi and Sephardic ethnic backgrounds, among others by strengthening the link between ethnicity and religion. |
