| Summary, etc. | Résumé Studien über die Deutschen (littéralement, Études sur les Allemands, non encore traduit en français) est publié en 1989, cinquante ans après la première parution de Über den Prozess der Zivilisation. L’ouvrage est le dernier dont l’auteur ait autorisé la parution, l’année précédant sa mort. Dans cette autre contribution majeure de sa sociologie historique à l’étude du politique, Norbert Elias tente de comprendre pourquoi et d’expliquer comment, dans les années 1930 et 1940, une majorité d’Allemands a pu accepter l’extermination des juifs d’Europe et, pour nombre d’entre eux, y participer activement. Mais dans quelle mesure une théorie de la civilisation peut-elle rendre compte de ce que Norbert Elias considérait lui-même comme un effondrement ou une régression du processus de civilisation : la barbarie nazie ? Et les efforts déployés en ce sens dans les Studien impliquent-ils des amendements notables aux conceptions développées à partir des années 1930 ? Enfin, quel est l’apport spécifique d’Elias aux études sur le national-socialisme ? L’article entend précisément creuser ces trois questions. |

| Summary, etc. | Studien über die Deutschen (The Germans, not yet translated into French) was published in 1989, fifty years after the first edition of Über den Prozess der Zivilisation. The work is the last one the author allowed to be published, the year before his death. This is another major contribution of Norbert Elias’ historical sociology to the study of politics, and it tries to understand why and explains how, in the 1930s and 1940s, a majority of Germans were able to accept the extermination of the Jews of Europe and for many of them to take an active part in it. But to what extent can a theory of civilization account for what Norbert Elias considered himself as a collapse or a regression of the civilizing process: nazi barbarity? And do the efforts made in this direction in the Studien suggest noteworthy amendments to the conceptions developed in the 1930s? Lastly, what is Elias’ specific contribution to the studies on national-socialism? The article specifically attempts to delve into these three questions. |
