| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe parcours de Norbert Elias a suscité des jugements antinomiques. À leur origine, il y a notamment la question de savoir ce que furent les intentions exactes de l’auteur de Über den Prozess der Zivilisation, livre publié en 1939 dont la thèse apparente (la pacification des sociétés européennes) paraît si mal résister à la réfutation que lui aurait apportée Hitler. Afin d’éviter le piège de l’anachronisme, l’objet de cet article est de préciser, tout d’abord, les conditions sociales ayant favorisé l’émergence, entre 1930 et 1933, d’un vaste projet de refondation sociologique, dont Über den Prozess der Zivilisation constitue une sorte d’aboutissement dans les conditions de l’exil. Il s’agira, ensuite, d’analyser la réception de ce livre au lendemain de sa parution, avant de s’interroger, finalement, sur les raisons pour lesquelles Elias a échoué à faire paraître une traduction anglaise de son opus magnum pendant la guerre. |

| Summary, etc. | Norbert Elias’ trajectory raised contradictory points of view. In particular there is the question of the exact intentions of the author of Über den Prozess der Zivilisation. The apparent thesis of this book, published in 1939 – the pacification of European societies – doesn’t stand up against Hitler’s refutation. So as to avoid the trap of anachronism, this article first aims at pointing out the social conditions that fostered the emergence, between 1930 and 1933, of a vast project of sociological reorganization of which Über den Prozess der Zivilisation, published in exil, would be a kind of end achievement. The article then looks at how the book was received at its publication. And lastly, it questions the reasons for which Elias failed to get an English translation of his opus magnum published during the war. |
