| Summary, etc. | This article examines the energy policy in the industrial sector in East Germany during the first fifteen years after World War II. It deals with energy scarcity generated by the disruption of hard coal supplies from West German regions to East Germany. The article traces the measures taken by the communist authorities to cope with the hard coal shortage and create an alternative energy basis on which to build the German Democratic Republic. These measures relied, in particular, on increased domestic lignite mining, which were identified as crucial to ensure the energy security of the country. |
