| Summary, etc. | There is no consensus on a definition of “educational broadcasting”??”nor of “quality” or “cultural” television. For educational television, the encounter between the main actors in the radio and television sector and the educational institutions has led to heated debate. This paper examines how French public service broadcasting (PSB) has dealt with its educative assignment. Contemporary questions linked to the emergence of digitalization and its impact on the traditional television sector reflect a rich opportunity to reassess the role and content of these educative missions. First, previous educational projects and experiences carried out by French public television are considered. This synthetic view of the recent past explains how the new website “FranceTV éducation,” launched in 2012, is of special importance to PSB in today's digital world. |
