| Summary, etc. | Étonnamment récurrent, avec des constantes, le mot « mais » apparaît dans l’ouvrage Les vasistas du poète Jean Grosjean dans quatre contextes surtout : description des paysages du monde et de l’âme, expression du doute, réflexion sur le mode paradoxal d’être de Dieu, émerveillement en dépit de l’adversité. Aussi bref soit-il, ce mot est ici chargé de sens. Pour marquer le changement, un « mais » de transition souligne notre finitude. Le « mais » oppositionnel dit la tentation de s’arc-bouter contre notre condition. L’emporte cependant un autre « mais », confiant, qui nous fait entrer dans la dynamique vers laquelle pointe l’étymologie. Ce dernier « mais », aussi doux soit-il, relève du défi. |

| Summary, etc. | Strangely recurring in Grosjean’s Les Vasistas, the word but appears in four different contexts : description of world- and soul-landscapes, expression of a doubt, reflexion on God’s paradoxical mode of being, wonder in spite of adversity. Short as it be, this word is here pregnant with meaning. When it expresses a change, a transitional but underlines our finite state. The but which stresses an opposition evidences the temptation of bracing ourselves against our condition. There is yet a third, and most important, acception of the term : the confident but which introduces us into the dynamics which is indicated by the etymology. This last but, how sweet it might sound, is an answer to a challenge. |
