| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | The child characters, in the novels of Bernanos, are the victims of predatory adults who assault them sexually, who drive them to suicide or who kill them. In the absence of a protective and benevolent father figure, only the narrator assumes towards them an attitude of respect which restores them to their dignity. The serious deficiency of fathers which reaches its lowest point in the characters of paedophiles, expresses in fictional mode, an antipathy towards humanity in itself which borders on self-destruction. The humiliation of children is the ultimate sign of a refusal of salvation which the novelist, plumbing the depths, is determined to proclaim. |
