520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The church foundings performed by the Bishops of Tours in their diocese over the 5th and 6th centuries are known to us thanks to a passage which lists them in book x, 31 of Gregory of Tours’ work. But the exact meaning of one of the turns of phrase Gregory uses, v icum aedificavit, remains unclear. The specificities of Gregory’s testimony can be identified by referring to canons of Merovingian councils which dealt with issues related to rural parishes. The collation of these sources leads to reevaluation of all the terms used by Gregory and of realities which these terms were meant to describe, particularly when it comes to the meaning of the words parochia and diocesis. This lexical analysis opens the way to a new hypothesis for the meaning of the vicum aedificavit formula.
