| Summary, etc. | RésuméDepuis une dizaine d’années, les instances dirigeantes de la recherche agronomique en France incitent les chercheurs à se pencher sur la question du « bien-être » des animaux d’élevage en invoquant les exigences actuelles de la demande sociale. En fait, cette nouvelle préoccupation trouve son origine dans les réglementations de l’Union européenne qui imposent un desserrement progressif, mais apparemment inéluctable, des contraintes subies par ces animaux. L’argument de la demande sociale permet de faire l’impasse sur les rôles respectifs de l’État et de la science dans la dégradation des conditions de vie des animaux au cours du processus d’industrialisation de l’élevage. |

| Summary, etc. | For the last ten years, the institutional leaders of agronomical research in France have been encouraging researchers to look into the welfare of farm animals, a concern raised in the name of current social demand. As a matter of fact, this new preoccupation originates with European Union rules which impose a gradual but apparently inescapable alleviation of the constraints presently bearing on farm animals. The social demand argument obfuscates the history of the relationship between the State and science and their respective roles in the degradation of animal living conditions during the process of industrialization of livestock farming. |
