| Summary, etc. | RésuméEntre le milieu du xixe siècle et le dernier quart du xxe siècle, les hautes vallées cévenoles connaissent un double mouvement de déprise agraire et de reboisement étatique qui se traduit par une augmentation paradoxale de la conflictualité, l’arbre devenant à la fois le moyen concret et le symbole d’une éviction des pasteurs-cultivateurs de leur propre espace de vie. Les sources de cette « guerre de l’arbre », qui agite les Cévennes pendant plus d’un siècle, sont une occasion rare pour l’historien de poser la question de l’articulation des enjeux matériels et symboliques dans l’évolution du rapport à l’espace rural, compris à la fois comme terroir et comme paysage. |

| Summary, etc. | From the middle of the xixth century to the last quarter of the xxth century, the upper valleys of the Cévennes experienced a far-reaching movement of depopulation, which, together with a State decision to promote reforestation on the main summits and slopes, made for a conflict-ridden evolution. The reforestation process was seen by those peasants remaining in the area as an economic and symbolic dispossession. The rich and varied primary sources documenting this long-lasting conflict provide the historian with an opportunity to link material and symbolic stakes, and to understand the process through which mountains becamee landscapes. |
