Les grands monastères, qui ont souffert des incursions sarrasines et hongroises, n’ont pas perdu le contrôle du sol. Les modalités de la remise en valeur dépendent des choix faits par les gestionnaires selon les conditions locales. Les contrats agraires qui suivent soulignent que les abbés du Mont-Cassin n’ont pas bouleversé les structures foncières : par une politique très différenciée, ils ont cherché à tirer à moindres frais le meilleur parti du mouvement général de croissance. |

| Summary, etc. | In the 950s, the mid-Italian peninsula witnessed a general restructuring of landholding and a rebuil-ding movement, after three quarters of a century of crisis. The large monasteries, which had had to deal with the Sarracen and Hungarian forays, had never lost control of the land, but the specific forms land improvements would take depended on the choices their managers would make according to the local context. The agricultural tenancy contracts which were drawn thereupon show conclusively that the Monte Cassino abbotts did not dramatically change the existing landholding structure. Instead, through a highly differentiated approach, they tried to make the most of the general movement of growth, at the lowest possible cost. |
