Celle-ci reflète la hiérarchie de la société. Mais, en toute hypothèse, tous les convives, quelque soit leur rang, disposent de garanties pratiquement semblables pour s’assurer de la qualité des repas qui leur sont servis. Quant aux banquets, ils répondent certes à un besoin de convivialité mais, tout autant, à l’intérêt bien compris du seigneur. |

Such was the basic menu, which mirrored social hierarchies. However, all guests, whatever the circumstances and their social standing, were entitled to certain guarantees as to the quality of the meals they were served. Banquets on the other hand did respond to a need for conviviality, obviously, but were also an expression of enlightened self-interest on the part of the lord. |
