| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The fate of Uruguayan forests, between « destruction » and « unruly uses »The European colonization of South America is generally analyzed by environmental historians as an ecological disaster. Contemporary sources seemingly fit this interpretation, especially for areas of early Spanish settlement, since they highlight various environmental crises, some forest-related. This paper provides a critical reinterpretation of these sources, using a case study covering the territory of present-day Uruguay during the colonial period (from the end of the 16th century to the 1820s). Those who claimed that there was a forest crisis mays have done so as part of a strategy to monoplize wood as a resource. It is thus indispensable to problematize the interpretation of these narratives within the framework of rural conflicts which were quite intense in the Rio de la Plata region. This new approach enables us to develop a more complex understanding of the environmental evolution of the continent after Europeans colonized it. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
