| Summary, etc. | RésuméEn 1878, Alexandre Ribot est candidat au siège de député de la seconde circonscription de l’arrondissement de Boulogne-sur-Mer. Jeune juriste libéral formé à Paris, il n’a pas d’expérience politique de terrain et connaît mal le Calaisis. Les espaces ruraux lui sont particulièrement étrangers. En dépit de cette méconnaissance initiale, il parvient à se faire élire et demeure député du Pas-de-Calais pendant près de quarante années. Cette longévité politique s’explique par une mutation profonde du député Ribot. A ses débuts, il est volontiers hautain et méprisant avec ses électeurs ruraux. Il en vient pourtant à apprécier leur compagnie et à s’enraciner dans sa circonscription. Cette conversion démocratique accompagne le mouvement de politisation des campagnes du Pas-de-Calais et leur ralliement à la République opportuniste et progressiste. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1878, Alexandre Ribot ran for a seat of representative in the second district of the arrondissement of Boulogne-sur-Mer. As a young liberal jurist educated in Paris, he had no grassroots political experience and little knowledge of the Calais area. He was particularly ignorant of the rural scene. In spite of this initial handicap, he succeeded in his bid for election, and remained a representative of Pas-de-Calais for almost forty years. This political longevity is the result of a deep-reaching trasformation of representative Ribot himself. While often haughty and scornful with the rural voters at first, he came to enjoy their company and push deep roots in his district. This conversion to democracy took place along with the politicization of the Pas-de-Calais countryside and its being won over by Progressive and Opportunist Republicans. |
