| Summary, etc. | RésuméDans la diversité des redevances ressortissant du prélèvement seigneurial, on peut distinguer des rentes, tel le chevage, les gélines ou certaines corvées, dont l’aspect symbolique semble largement l’emporter sur leur valeur économique apparente. Cette valeur symbolique et emblématique de la redevance seigneuriale participe pleinement de l’expression d’une domination seigneuriale. Le procès de Berthet de Lessard, paysan relevant des terres du monastère de Saint-Oyend de Joux/Saint-Claude (Jura) en 1422-1423, permet de lever le voile sur les pratiques seigneuriales et les formes souterraines de la résistance paysanne. Parce qu’il concerne une redevance symbolique, il constitue un cas emblématique pris très au sérieux par les autorités seigneuriales. Il témoigne d’une lutte sourde qui oppose deux conceptions de la redevance et de la relation seigneuriale, distinguant une libre acceptation de la tutelle seigneuriale d’une contrainte imposée par le droit. |

On the trial of Berthet de Lessart (1423)Among the various fees making up seignorial levies, there were some, such as chevage, gelinage, or certain kinds of corvées, the symbolic dimension of which was seemingly much more important than their perceived economic value. This symbolic and emblematic content of the seignorial fees was an integral part of the expression of seignorial domination. The 1422-23 trial of Berthet de Lessard, a peasant belonging to the landholdings of the Saint-Oyend de Joud/Saint-Claude monastery in the Jura, provides us with an opportunity to bring to light both seignorial practice and hidden strategies of peasant resistance. This trial revolved around a symbolic fee, and therefore was an emblematic case, which seignorial local authorities treated with the utmost concern. The event bore witness to a muted struggle between two opposite views of seignorial fees and the seignorial relationship, seen either as a free acceptance of seignorial tutelage or as a legally-based constraint.. |
