| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe roman rustique social constitue une source littéraire à la fois passionnante et périlleuse pour l’historien. Avec Jacquou le Croquant, Eugène Le Roy, fervent radical, dénonce les conditions de vie misérables de la petite paysannerie périgourdine dans le premier xixe siècle et en rend la noblesse rurale responsable. Cette fiction engagée et quelque peu manichéenne se nourrit pourtant d’une excellente connaissance du terrain et apporte un éclairage réel sur la richesse et la pauvreté aux champs en Périgord à cette époque. Afin de mesurer l’intérêt et les limites de cette source, il convient de confronter l’image de la pauvreté, de la richesse et des tensions qui opposent ces deux mondes, proposée dans le roman, à la réalité, en la croisant avec d’autres sources aussi variées que les recensements de population, les enquêtes agricoles locales et nationales, le cadastre, les archives des comices agricoles, la presse... Cette confrontation est l’occasion de souligner les frontières mouvantes qui délimitent ces deux notions et de montrer les spécificités périgourdines en la matière. Elle permet également de revisiter le mythe des éternelles tensions entre riches et pauvres, et de réétudier les liens qui les unissent tandis que les campagnes entament une profonde métamorphose.. |

| Summary, etc. | Wealth and poverty in the fields : Périgord in the days of Jacquou le CroquantThe social rustic novel constitutes a fascinating and perilous literary source for the historian. With Jacquou le Croquant, Eugène Le Roy, fervent radical republican, denounces the miserable living conditions of the small farming community in Perigord in the first part of the xixth century and makes the rural nobility responsible. This committed and manichean fiction is nourished with an excellent grass roots knowledge and sheds a real light on the wealth and the poverty of rural Périgord in this period. To measure the interest and limits of this source, it is advisable to confront the image of poverty, wealth and the tensions which set these two worlds, proposed in the novel, against the reality, by crossing it with the other varied sources, such as population census, local and national agricultural inquiries, land registry, agricultural associations archives, press ... This confrontation is the opportunity to underline the unstable borders which bound these two notions and to show the specifics of Perigord on the subject. It also allows us to revisit the myth of eternal tension between rich and poor and to reanalyze the links which unite them whilst the countryside begins a profound metamorphosis. |

| Summary, etc. | ResumenLos intermediarios entre señores y campesinos son un elemento esencial, aunque mal conocido del señorío medieval. Escogidos entre los miembros de la elite de la sociedad rural local por el señor que hacia de ellos sus vasallos, conocían perfectamente el territorio y los hombres que estaban a su cargo. No sólo tenían que prestar homenaje a sus señores, les monjas de Autun, sino también reconocer su dependencia mediante el pago de una cantidad específica. Eran claramente más los representantes de los señores frente a los campesinos que no a la inversa: les comunicaban los órdenes de las señoras de Autun y cobraban los censos en su nombre, reteniendo una cantidad por su trabajo; a menudo, se encargaban además de la baja justicia. Estos cargos les permitían normalmente enriquecerse, más allá de los bienes que poseían previamente, e ingresar en las filas de los notables y hasta de la nobleza local, superando así el nivel que tenían al principio. |
