| Summary, etc. | Lorsque se déroule un processus d’identification des criminels, les dépositions des villageois révèlent que la surveillance est bien antérieure aux délits : tout ce qui est étranger et inhabituel est déjà repéré. L’identification est ensuite réalisée par le « bruit » (la rumeur) qui associe des personnes aux faits incriminés. La prévôté d’Arches est particulièrement confrontée à des gens qui profitent des frontières pour échapper au système judiciaire lorrain. La justice doit être en mesure d’identifier et de contrôler les populations criminelles. Contre ses moyens, les voleurs ont leurs propres astuces et la justice saisit peut-être plus facilement les voleurs occasionnels que les criminels endurcis. |

| Summary, etc. | Throughout the process of identification of criminals, villagers’ testimonies show that surveillance had been conducted well before any offence took place. Anything foreign or unusual was immediately noticed. Identification was then achieved through «talk» (rumors) which linked individuals to the incriminating occurence. The prévôté of Arches was often confronted with delinquents who took advantage of the border to try and escape the judicial system of neighboring Lorraine. The justice system had to be able to identify and bring under control criminal populations. But thieves had developed some tricks of their own to escape its grasp, and its agents may have ended up capturing mostly occasional thieves, rather than hardened criminals. |

| Summary, etc. | Cuando se produce un proceso de identificación de criminales, los testimonios de los campesinos revelan que la vigilancia es anterior al delito: todo lo extranjero y poco habitual ya ha sido localizado. La identificación se realiza después por el “ruido” (el rumor) que asocia a las personas con los hechos incriminados. En el prebostazgo de Arches, concurren muchos delincuentes que aprovechan su situación fronteriza para escaparse del sistema judiciario del ducado de Lorena. La justicia debe ser capaz de identificar y de controlar a estos grupos criminales. Frente a los medios utilizados por la autoridad, los ladrones tienen también sus trampas, de manera que la justicia detiene sin duda con más facilidad a los delincuentes eventuales que a los empedernidos. |
