| Summary, etc. | Entre les années 1930 et les années 1950, Taïwan fut l’otage des politiques menées par trois grandes puissances – le Japon, les Etats-Unis et la Chine – soucieuses de préserver leurs intérêts dans la région. Au cours de ces années, l’île perdit son statut de colonie japonaise, et même d’une certaine manière celui de province chinoise, pour suivre sa propre voie dans la limite des contraintes imposées par le contexte géopolitique. Les deux régimes autoritaires qui gouvernèrent Formose durant cette période marquèrent chacun de leur empreinte la société taïwanaise. Au travers d’une approche interdisciplinaire englobant les domaines économique, socio-politique, ou encore artistique (danse, peinture, littérature), ce dossier spécial apporte un éclairage sur le processus qui a conduit à l’émergence d’une société pluraliste à Taïwan à un moment où les Formosans, qui avaient été soumis à l’influence des Japonais pendant un demi-siècle, étaient tiraillés entre les efforts du gouvernement nationaliste pour (ré)imposer la culture chinoise et la tentation de se rapprocher une nouvelle fois du Japon. |

| Summary, etc. | Between the 1930s and the 1950s, Taiwan was a hostage of the policies carried out by three leading global powers – Japan, the United States and China – that were eager to protect their interests in the region. During these years, the island gave up its status as a Japanese colony, and even in some ways as a Chinese province, to follow its own path within the constraints imposed by the geopolitical context. The two authoritarian regimes that ruled Formosa at that time both left marks on Taiwanese society. Through an interdisciplinary approach including economic, political and social aspects, as well as arts (dance, painting, literature), this special issue sheds light on the process that led to the emergence of a pluralistic society in Taiwan at a time when the Formosans, who had been subject to the influence of the Japanese for half a century, were being torn between the Nationalist government’s efforts to (re)impose Chinese culture and the temptation to move closer to Japan again. |
