| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | The parentification of children exposed to domestic violenceChildren’s parentification is a variable reported as mediating the relationship between domestic violence and child adjustment. Parentification adds to the negative impact of domestic violence and contributes to children’s distress. Nevertheless, the predictors of parentification in children exposed to domestic violence are not yet adequately identified. The present study assesses the influence of the child’s and the mother’s individual characteristics, as well as the quality of mother-child relationship, on parentification. We predicted that the more children are exposed to frequent and severe domestic violence, the more they blame themselves for such violence; the more their mothers exhibit psychological distress, and the less satisfactory the mother-child relationship, the more children become parentified. The research was conducted with 117 mothers who were victims of domestic violence and their children aged between 8 and 12 years. Mother’s distress and, to a lesser degree, child self-blame are important predictors of parentification. The quality of mother-child relationship, particularly the negative attitude of the child toward his or her mother, is another important predictor. Our discussion underlines the importance of evaluating both the mother’s and the child’s perception of the mother- child relationship because parents and children may view parentification in different ways. Parentification seems to be perceived by mothers as associated with warmth and proximity in the parent-child relationship, while such characteristics may be absent according to children. Rather, children seem to view parentification as a threat to their own needs and personal safety. |
