| Summary, etc. | Hans Schmidkunz signe en 1907 une introduction à la pédagogie universitaire. Il veut y donner un nouveau volet à la pédagogie générale. L’ouvrage est parcouru par une tension : arrimer la pédagogie académique à une science de l’éducation déjà établie sans nier les spécificités du supérieur, débarrassé de la contrainte scolaire. Là où le secondaire mise sur une forme d’enseignement magistrale, l’étudiant doit se montrer actif dans l’apprentissage, engagé dans les études et prompt à se laisser conseiller par ses professeurs. L’université ayant pour mission de spécialiser l’étudiant et de l’initier à la recherche, elle ne peut commencer par ce qui tombe sous les sens, pour remonter aux concepts : faire des hypothèses et acquérir des vertus morales générales en étudiant certaines disciplines, en vue aussi d’une profession future, sont ce qui est demandé à l’étudiant. Il est bon que l’université propose des exercices, et donne dès l’abord des cours d’orientation dans les études, pour cultiver l’activité autonome des jeunes gens. S’appuyant sur une tradition allemande multiséculaire, Schmidkunz essaie de penser l’université entre histoire et actualité, inertie et innovation. |

| Summary, etc. | Hans Schmidkunz published his introduction to university pedagogy in 1907. His aim was to give general pedagogy a new dimension. The work is permeated with the strain of aligning academic pedagogy with the already established science of education without ignoring the specific features of higher education, freed from the constraints of schools. Where secondary schools focus on classroom-based learning, students must take an active role in their learning, engaging in their studies and readily taking advice from their teachers. Given that a university’s role is to encourage students to specialise and introduce them to research, it can only logically begin by going back to the basics: what is required of students is to make assumptions and acquire general moral virtues by studying certain disciplines, with a view to a future profession. It is beneficial that universities provide exercises and induction sessions at the beginning of a course to cultivate independent learning for young people. Drawing on an age-old German tradition, Schmidkunz endeavours to place universities at the crossroads between history and the present, between inertia and innovation. |
