| Summary, etc. | Une fouille menée pendant les années 1982-1985 et 2003 dans la ville d’Enez a permis de mettre au jour une riche domus incendiée à la fin du iiie siècle. La mosaïque a été brisée et brûlée, et la décoration architecturale éclatée en morceaux. Les habitants n’ont récupéré ni la collection de statuettes en bronze ni le trésor monétaire (environ 125 pièces) répandus sur la mosaïque. Décorée d’une scène théâtrale entourée de motifs géométriques, la mosaïque couvrait le pavement d’une chambre de femme. En reprenant ici son étude, nous montrons qu’elle appartient à la série des représentations inspirées de la comédie Synaristôsai (« Femmes au déjeuner ») de Ménandre. À la différence de la mosaïque hellénistique de Pompéi et des mosaïques romaines impériales de Zeugma et de Mytilène, la mosaïque d’Ainos n’illustre pas l’ivrognerie de la vieille courtisane Philainis. Elle montre seulement la jeune Plangôn présentant les cadeaux reçus de son fiancé à son amie, la jeune courtisane Pythias, fille de Philainis. Cette scène, appartenant également au premier acte, est confondue avec la scène de l’ivrognerie sur une mosaïque contemporaine de Daphnè-Antioche (la « mosaïque de Ménandre » au musée de Hatay). En conséquence, la mosaïque d’Ainos nous permet de préciser le contenu de la comédie perdue, d’observer la réception iconographique de Ménandre dans la Thrace romaine et d’enrichir la série d’objets liés à la culture théâtrale à Ainos, dont nous offrons ici le premier inventaire. |

| Summary, etc. | An excavation in the modern city of Enez between 1982-1985 and 2003 brought to light a rich domus destroyed by fire by the end of the third century ad. The mosaic was burnt and shattered, and the architectural decoration of the house scattered into pieces. People abandoned the ruin without taking out the furniture: a collection of bronze statuettes and a treasure of ca 125 coins remained spread on the mosaic. Decorated with a theatrical scene surrounded by geometrical patterns, the mosaic covered the floor of a woman’s chamber. In this new study, we show that this scene belongs to the series of mosaics inspired from Menander’s play Synaristôsai (“Women at lunch”). Unlike the Hellenistic mosaic from Pompeii and the Roman imperial mosaics of Zeugma and Mytilene, the Ainos mosaic does not show the drunkenness of the old courtesan Philainis, but only the young Plangôn presenting the gifts received from her fiancé to her friend the young courtesan Pythias, daughter of Philainis. Both the scene with the gift, from Ainos, and the scene with the old drunk courtesan belong to the first act and are merged together on a contemporary mosaic from Daphne-Antioch (the “Menander Mosaic” now in Hatay Museum). Therefore, the Ainos mosaic brings new information about the content of the lost play and about Menander’s iconographic reception in Roman Thrace. Besides the mosaic, we present here the first inventory of Roman objects related to the theatrical culture in Ainos. |
