| Summary, etc. | La Révolution française promettait d’accompagner un vaste mouvement d’émancipation des femmes en établissant leur place au sein d’un espace public qui leur avait été longtemps interdit. La virulence de la controverse parlementaire sur l’armement des femmes est le résultat d’une stratégie de réassignation de genre et de division sexuelle de l’activité martiale. Elle écarte durablement, de droit sinon de fait, les citoyennes révolutionnaires des mouvements d’insurrection populaire, mais aussi des champs de bataille. Pourtant, la figure emblématique de la combattante devient une véritable obsession au sein de l’imaginaire symbolique. Elle participe à la perpétuation d’un inconscient culturel misogyne. Stigmatisation de la boutefeux, censée exhorter les masses à la cruauté, et caricature de la virago, supposée s’approprier les attributs de la masculinité, sur fond d’érotisation d’un trouble dans le genre, témoignent d’un fantasme prédominant : celui de l’inversion des rapports de force entre hommes et femmes. |

| Summary, etc. | The French Revolution promised to go along with a vast movement of female emancipation in establishing the place of women within a public sphere from which they had long been banned. The virulence of the parliamentary controversy about arming women was the result of a strategy of reassigning gender roles and of sexual discrimination in military activity. By law, if not de facto, it brushed aside for a long time the revolutionary citizens who took part in movements of popular insurrection and also on the battle fields. And yet the figure of the female fighter became a veritable obsession in the symbolic imagination, contributing to the perpetuation of a misogynous cultural unconscious. Stigmatization of the firebrand, intended to exhort the masses to cruelty, and the caricature of the virago, supposed to have appropriated the attributes of masculinity and grounded in an eroticization of a troubled gender confusion, testify to a prevailing fantasy: that of the inversion of power relations between men and women. |
