| Summary, etc. | RésuméPrécédées d’une flatteuse réputation de produits de plaisir et/ou de remèdes à tous les maux, les plantes toxiques, familièrement appelées « herbes » ici évoquées (tabacs, opiacés, fruits fermentés et distillés) sont bien connues des amateurs depuis des siècles. Le xixe siècle en a exalté l’une des formes de consommation, inaugurant de nouveaux goûts et de nouveaux usages. De produits de plaisir, les « herbes » deviennent produits nocifs. La science médicale découvre leur toxicité, inquiétante pour le corps (et l’esprit) de l’individu, comme pour celui de la nation. C’est l’usage qui fait le poison, et non le produit lui-même. |

| Summary, etc. | The toxic plants and substances evoked here (tobacco, opiates, distillation and fermentation products) have been known for centuries as products of pleasure and/or universal remedies. Their consumption as products of pleasure increased in the 19th century with the emergence of new tastes and uses. But when the medical science discovered their dangerous toxicity both for an individual’s body and mind and for a nation they were regarded as poisons. Their toxicity however lies more in the way they are used than in themselves. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungDie hier studierten Giftpflanzen und -substanzen (Tabak, Opiate, Destillations- und Gärungsprodukte) wurden jahrhundertelang als lustbringende Produkte und/oder Allheilmittel verbraucht. Ihr Konsum als lustbringende Produkte wächst im 19. Jahrhundert mit dem Erscheinen neuer Geschmacke und Gebräuche. Wenn die ärztliche Wissenschaft ihre gefährliche Giftigkeit für den Körper und Geist eines Individuums und für eine Nation entdeckt, werden sie dann als Gifte betrachtet. Ihre Giftigkeit liegt aber mehr an dem Gebrauch der von ihnen gemacht wird als an ihnen selbst. |
