| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes cartes ont-elles une influence sur le message qu’elles veulent transmettre ? En arrivant pour la première fois en Belarus (Biélorussie) pour démarrer ses recherches, l’auteur s’est fait expliquer par les autorités les dégâts liés à la radioactivité du pays à l’aide d’une carte. Découvrant les territoires contaminés, s’ajustaient mal pour lui la réalité et la représentation qu’il s’en faisait. La carte de la contamination montre la répartition des phénomènes à la manière d’une photographie, c’est-à-dire d’une image figée, qui plus est, d’un phénomène invisible. Elle ne montre que ce que les autorités veulent montrer. Non spécialiste en cartographie, l’auteur pose ici le problème du désarroi, du fatalisme face à une crise qui n’a pas encore dévoilé toute sa dimension humaine. Les cartes peuvent-elles nous aider à faire « émerger une vision du réel » ? |

| Summary, etc. | Do maps distort the message they want to convey ? When the author came in Belarus (Byelorussia) for the first time to begin his research work the officials showed him a map of the radioactivity damage. The contaminated territories he discovered did not fit well however with the reality and his representation of it. The map shows the contamination distribution like a photograph, i.e. gives a fixed image of a phenomenon that is invisible besides. It only shows what the officials want to show. As a non-specialist in cartography the author evokes the feeling of helplessness and the fatalism of people confronted with a crisis which has not still revealed its whole human dimension. Are maps able to help us let « emerge a vision of the reality » ? |

Bei seinem ersten Aufenthalt in Belarus (Weissenrussland), um Forschungen zu unternehmen, liess sich der Autor die Karte der Radioaktivitätsschaden von den Behörden erklären. Die verseuchten Territorien, die er entdeckte, entsprachen nicht genau der Realität und seiner eigenen Vorstellung. Die Karte zeigt die Verseuchungsverteilung wie ein Photograph, das heisst, wie das erstarrte Bild eines überdies unsichtbaren Phänomens. Sie zeigt nur das, was die Behörden zeigen wollen. Als ein Nicht-Spezialist in Kartographie erwähnt der Autor die Verwirrung und den Fatalismus der Bevölkerung, die mit einer Krise konfrontiert ist, die noch nicht ihre ganze menschliche Dimension gezeigt hat. Können Karten uns helfen, eine « Realitätsanschauung entstehen zu lassen » ? |
