| Summary, etc. | RésuméSur la base d’une enquête historique s’intéressant à deux épreuves distinctes, le 100 mètres d’athlétisme et le record de l’heure cycliste, l’article cherche à comprendre les mécanismes de constitution des grandes figures sportives modernes : en plus des apports techniques les plus avancés tels que revêtement des pistes ou vêtements sportifs, le chronométrage est devenu tellement précis (écart zéro) qu’il est devenu difficile, voire impossible, de départager les concurrents. Dès lors, c’est la valeur mythique accordée par le public à leurs exploits qui discrimine finalement les athlètes : la valeur de la performance est devenue magique. Hiérarchiser les performances relève ainsi d’une entreprise symbolique : désir de retour à l’homme-nature et fascination envers la figure de l’homme-machine. |

| Summary, etc. | On the basis of a historical study of two sport events, the athletics 100 metres race and the cycling hour record, the authors try to understand the mechanisms of formation of modern great athletic figures. Owing to most recent advances in track coating and sportswear technology and to the absolute timing accuracy (zero gap) athletes achievements are often so close that it is difficult and even impossible to decide between competitors. So, what finally discriminates them is the mythical value spectators attach to their achievements : these have got a magic value. Their hierarchization has thus a symbolic meaning : the desire to return to the Nature Man and the fascination for the Machine Man. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungAuf der Basis einer historischen Studie zweier Sportereignisse, des athletischen Hundertmeterlaufs und des Radrennen-Stundenrekords, versuchen die Autoren, die Mechanismen der Bildung von modernen grossen athletischen Gestalten zu verstehen. Infolge der neuesten technischen Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet des Rennbahnbelags und der Sportbekleidung und der absoluten Genauigkeit der Zeitmessung (Nullunterschied), sind often die Athletenleistungen einander so nah, dass es schwierig und sogar unmöglich ist, zwischen den Wettkämpfern die Entscheidung herbeizuführen. Schliesslich werden die Athleten durch den mythischen Wert unterschieden, den die Zuschauer ihren Leistungen beimessen : diese haben einen magischen Wert bekommen. Ihre hierarchische Gliederung hat so eine symbolische Bedeutung : den Wunsch zum Naturmensch zurückzukommen und die Faszination für die Gestalt des Maschine-Manns. |
