| Summary, etc. | RésuméCitoyens d’une nation fondée sur la défense de l’individu contre l’État et sur le droit à la contestation, les Américains sont particulièrement soucieux de préserver la liberté d’expression individuelle. Se basant sur l’étude de cette société, l’auteure cherche à établir si les cas où la « sécurité nationale » est en danger se distinguent radicalement de la pratique courante ou non. Elle constate que de nombreux énoncés de principe se retournent à l’occasion contre ceux qui les émettent. Ils sont aussi détournés à leur profit par des instances de pouvoir qui, sous divers prétextes, ne se contentent pas d’exprimer « leur » vérité, mais veulent l’imposer aux autres, érodant ainsi l’apprentissage et la pratique du débat d’idées. |

| Summary, etc. | U.S. citizens, as members of a nation which originally defined itself as protecting the individual from the State and guaranteeing the right to dissent, are particularly committed to safeguarding freedom of expression. In this article, based on the observation and the study of that society, the author examines whether, when « national security » is seen to be in jeopardy, the practice regarding civil liberties changes radically. She concludes that this society always struggles with its own contradictions insofar as a large number of groups, some of them highly organized and with a political agenda, are intent not only on expressing « their » own truths, but on forcing them on other citizens, thereby preventing others from learning and practising intellectual debate. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungAls Staatsangehörige einer Nation, die sich auf die Verteidigung des Individuums gegen den Staat und auf das Recht zum Protest gründet, sind die Amerikaner besonders darauf bedacht, ihre individuelle Ausdrucksfreiheit zu bewahren. Die Autorin stellt sich in ihrer Studie dieser Gesellschaft, die Frage, ob sich die Praxis der zivilen Freiheiten gründlich ändert, wenn die « nationale Sicherheit » gefährdert ist. Daraus folgert sie, dass diese Gesellschaft mit ihren eigenen Widersprüchen Kämpft, da zahlreiche Gruppen, unter denen einige hochorganisiert sind und ein politisches Programm haben, nicht nur ihre eigene Überzengungen zum Ausdruck bringen, sondern sie auch anderen Staatsangehörigen auferlegen wollen, und sie dadurch daran hindern, an der intellektuellen Debatte teilzunehmen. |
