| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’histoire du fer est nourrissante pour les imaginations, particulièrement à travers ses usages guerriers. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres principalement, un abondant discours d’inspiration pacifiste a stigmatisé les « marchands de canons ». Il a contribué à obscurcir les réalités économiques et sociologiques de l’industrie et du commerce des armes en concentrant sur la figure archétypale de Basil Zaharoff (1849-1936) un appétit de puissance et de lucre illimité et une capacité de nuisance quasi démoniaque, qui en ont fait un phénomène de merveilleux (dans sa face noire) et de fantasmagorie. La méthode d’analyse du discours sur Zaharoff a consisté en une lecture critique de la littérature la plus large possible, contemporaine ou postérieure : biographies, articles de presse, ouvrages (souvent polémiques) sur les marchands de canons et le commerce des armes, l’espionnage, les espaces stratégiques liés au personnage (pétrole du Moyen-Orient, Grèce et Anatolie, Monaco) et romans. Cette recherche s’intègre dans un sujet global d’étude des représentations et de l’imaginaire de l’industrie métallurgique. |

| Summary, etc. | Iron history feeds the imagination, more especially through its war uses. In the interwar years arms dealers were stigmatized by an abundant pacifist-inspired discourse that contributed to darken the economic and sociological situation of industry and arms trade by imputing to the archetypal figure of Basil Zaharoff an unlimited thirst for power and lucre and a quasi-demoniacal capacity for nuisance, thus turning it into a fantasmagorical dark figure. The discourse on Zaharoff was analyzed by means of a critical reading of the most comprehensive literature contemporaneous with it or posterior to it : biographies, press articles, publications (often polemical) on arms dealers and arms trade, on espionage and strategic places connected with him (Middle East, Greece and Anatolia, Monaco), as well as novels. This research work is part of a global study of the representations and imagination of the metallurgic industry. |

In der Zeit zwischen den zwei Weltkriegen wurden die Waffenhändler von einer reichlich pazifistisch inspirierten Rede stigmatisiert. Diese trug dazu bei, die wirtschaftlichen und soziologischen Realitäten der Industrie und des Handels in schwarzen Farben zu schildern, indem sie der archetypischen Figur Basil Zaharoffs (1848-1936) unbegrenzte Machtgier und Gewinnlust sowie eine fast dämonische Schadensfähigkeit zuschrieb und ihn als ein wundersames phantasmagorisches Phänomen erscheinen liess. Die Analyse der Rede über Zaharoff beruht auf einer kritischen Analyse eines weiten Fächers zeitgenössischer und späterer Literatur : Biographien, Presseartikeln, Werke (oft polemisch) über Waffenhändler und Waffenhandel, Spionage und strategische Orte, mit denen er verbunden war (Mittlerer Osten, Griechenland und Anatolien, Monaco), sowie Romane. Diese Forschung wurde im Rahmen einer globalen Studie der Darstellungen und Vorstellungen der Metallindustrie unternommen. |
