Cushing chez les Zuñi et ses apports théoriques majeurs font de ce personnage le pionnier de l’observation participante et le découvreur de la raison structurale du totémisme, admiré par les plus grands anthropologues du début du xx esiècle. Pourtant, il apparaît aujourd’hui manifestement sous-estimé par l’histoire de la discipline. On se demandera si cette marginalisation ne tient pas à la volonté de Cushing d’être un médiateur de l’altérité amérindienne, un statut difficilement compatible avec les catégories académiques des sciences sociales. |

| Summary, etc. | Frank Hamilton Cushing. Ethnologist and First Zuñi War Chief F. H. Cushing’s initiatory experience among the Zuñi and the topic of his main theoretical efforts made him the pioneer of participant observation and the discoverer of totemism’s structural logic, admired by the greatest anthropologists of the early 20th Century. Meanwhile, he is strikingly underrated within the current teaching of anthropology’s history. We shall inquire whether such a marginalization would be owed to Cushing’s willing to be a mediator of the Amerindian otherness, a status that is hardly compatible with the academic categories of the social sciences. |

Cushing entre los zuñis y sus mayores aportaciones teóricas hacen que este personaje, admirado por los más grandes antropólogos del inicio del siglo xx, debe de ser considerado como el pioniero de la observación participante y el descubridor de la razón estructural del totemismo. Con todo, hoy en día parece subestimado en la historia de la disciplina. Este artículo cuestiona esta marginación, el autor preguntándose si ésta se debe a la voluntad de Cushing de ser un mediador de la alteridad amerindiana, lo que sería un estatuto difícilmente compatible con las categorías académicas de las ciencias sociales. |

| Summary, etc. | Die ersten Erfahrungen von F-H. Cushing bei dem Stamm der Zuñi und seine theoretischen Ausführungen dazu machten aus dieser Person einen Pionier der teilnehmenden Beobachtung und Entdecker der strukturalen Begründung des Totismus. Er wurde von den großen Anthropologen des Beginns der zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts verehrt. Dennoch wird heute deutlich, dass er innerhalb seiner Disziplin unterschätzt wurde. Es kommt die Frage auf, ob diese Marginalisierung nicht mit der Tatsache einhergeht, dass Cushing ein Vermittler der Kultur der Indianer sein wollte; ein Status, der nur schwer mit den akademischen Kategorien der Sozialwissenschaften vereinbar war. |
