| Summary, etc. | Résumé Cet article s’intéresse à la fabrication des « martyrs de la mafia » comme modalité d’attestation de vérités, y compris politiques, et lieu de production de connaissances empiriques et de « théorèmes » sur la « mafia ». Une attention particulière est portée à la dimension matérielle des processus et performances de construction de la preuve. L’article analyse la manière dont cette fabrique (crafting) de la « mafia » est tiraillée entre actes de témoignage et « actes de silence », entre la société civile, l’Église et l’État. Il montre aussi comment chacune de ces entités, loin d’être un monolithe, est clivée par la « question mafieuse ». Il retrace les parcours de sanctification de deux figures de « juges martyrs », le juge Giovanni Falcone et le juge Rosario Livatino, en examinant la part prise par les « témoins » dans ce processus. Le martyre est ici analysé comme une modalité de preuve de l’existence de la « mafia », et par conséquent comme un processus de connaissance parallèle à celui amorcé par la justice pour savoir ce qu’elle est. En essayant de tirer profit des lectures et commentaires auquel la méthode Mafiacraft a donné lieu, cette contribution lance in fine une réflexion sur un régime de (non) connaissance (« Unknowing ») caractéristique de notre modernité. |

| Summary, etc. | Abstract This article focuses on the creation of “mafia martyrs” as a means of attesting to truths, including political ones, and as a source of empirical knowledge and of building “theorems” about “the mafia.” Particular attention is paid to the material dimension of the processes and performances involved in constructing evidence. The article analyzes how this crafting of the “mafia” is torn between acts of witnessing and acts of silence, between civil society, the Church, and the State. It also highlights how each of these entities, far from being monolithic, is divided by “the mafia issue.” It traces the paths to sanctification of two “martyr judges”—Judge Giovanni Falcone and Judge Rosario Livatino—by examining the role played by witness testimony in this process. Martyrdom is analyzed as a means of proving the existence of the mafia, and therefore as a process of knowledge parallel to the process initiated by the justice system to grasp what it is. Drawing on the commentaries generated by the Mafiacraft method, the article offers a reflection on a regime of (un)knowledge (“Unknowing”) characteristic of our modernity. |
