| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Skin disorders of cattle are common and sometimes spectacular, but all too often they are underestimated. They can affect health, welfare, zootechnical performance, carcass quality and hides value. Some are contagious, while others reveal nutritional imbalances or general diseases. For the practitioner, knowing how to identify these lesions and understand their causes is essential to guide the diagnosis, adapt the treatment and advise the breeder. This article provides a practical overview of bovine dermatoses encountered in mainland France, organised by major category: congenital, parasitic (mange, pediculosis, demodecia, etc.), bacterial (dermatophilosis, digital dermatitis), fungal (ringworm), protozoan (besnoitiosis), inflammatory (photosensitisation), vascular (ergotism), deficiency (zinc deficiency) and tumour (papilloma, lymphoma, etc.). Rigorous examination of the lesions, supplemented if necessary by samples, is essential. The skin may reflect an overall dysfunction in the herd. The veterinarian’s role goes beyond treatment: he or she must alert, prevent and support the farmer in a global approach that integrates the environment, feed, immunity and husbandry. |
