| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The diagnosis of glaucoma in horses is based on the combination of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and compatible clinical signs. Since the increase in IOP is often transient, it can cause clinical fluctuations, making diagnosis and monitoring more complex. Corneal oedema is the predominant sign, and other manifestations vary depending on the stage of glaucoma (acute or chronic). Vision loss may occur late, despite high IOP. The clinical approach involves a thorough examination, including the assessment of pupillary reflexes and evaluation of ocular structures, particularly to look for signs of uveitis, which is the most common cause of glaucoma in horses. Additional tests, such as ocular ultrasound, may be required in some cases. Early diagnosis improves visual prognosis and the horse’s comfort. |
