| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The simile comparing humans to machines may bear different meanings. Yet, as a brand new scientific program applying muscle physiology to the study of human work gradually appeared in France (roughly between 1860 and 1920), the metaphor began being used in a literal sense. “Professional work physiology” was first developed without any reference to Taylor – as his writings were not translated into French until the late 1900’s. When these two scientific traditions met, however, “professional work physiology” took a different turn. This paper investigates how, by comparing two different moments in this gradual formation of a novel discipline: 1858 and 1913, that is: before and after Taylor’s writings are introduced in France. Focusing each time on the experimental setups involved, the first part of the paper studies G.-A. Hirn’s “man-motor”, while the second studies Jules Amar’s “yield of the human machine”. The aim is to understand how the meaning of the simile evolved. |
