| Summary, etc. | Le succès de Donald Trump auprès de l’électorat chrétien aux élections présidentielles de 2016 a surpris les commentateurs. Le personnage et l’irréligiosité de Donald Trump paraissaient à ce point aux antipodes d’un tel électorat que beaucoup prévoyaient son rejet. L’inverse s’est finalement produit. L’électorat blanc, évangélique et catholique, s’identifiant comme pratiquant, a littéralement plébiscité l’outsider new-yorkais. Son fort ressentiment envers les avancées de la cause gay et lié à l’impression d’une politique anti-chrétienne pendant le second mandat Obama a donné à Donald Trump une opportunité maximale pour faire une campagne revancharde de restauration chrétienne. Ce faisant Donald Trump a posé les bases d’une politique chrétienne qui s’est consolidée pendant sa mandature. Cependant, l’électorat blanc pratiquant s’est en partie fracturé et déporté vers la personne et les propositions de Joe Biden dans la campagne présidentielle suivante. Si l’on compare les résultats de 2016 à ceux des élections présidentielles de 2020, une forme de dépolarisation et de redistribution semble se dessiner, qui pourrait signaler un reflux du God gap. |

| Summary, etc. | Donald Trump’s success with Christian voters in the 2016 election took many commentators by surprise. Trump’s personality and his irreligiosity appeared to put him at odds with this constituency, leading many to predict that he would fail to win them over. Yet, observant white evangelicals and Catholics voted overwhelmingly for the New York-based outsider. Their resentment vis-à-vis the advances of the LGBT cause, as well as a sense that the Obama administration in its second term had conducted a policy hostile to Christians, gave Trump the opportunity to lead a revanchist campaign centered around the promise of restoring America to its Christian roots. In doing so, Donald Trump laid the ground for a “Christianist” policy that only grew stronger during his presidency. However, the constituency of observant white Christians started to break up and some of them chose Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Comparing the results of the 2016 and 2020 elections reveals a decline in polarization, which might signal a narrowing of the God gap. |
