| Summary, etc. | Y a-t-il une histoire de la métaphysique ? titrait une publication parue aux Presses universitaires de France en 2005, sous la direction conjointe d’Yves Charles Zarka et de Bruno Pinchard. Le caractère interrogatif du titre déploie une histoire des généalogies de cette science qui ne se constitue sous sa forme substantivée et dénominative que dans la période moderne, là où, précisément, la pluralité possible de ses dénominations semble se dissiper et s’exténuer, au profit d’une ferme délimitation de son objet formel général (ens in communi ou ens in quantum ens) et de son objet spécial lorsqu’elle se divise selon les trois disciplines que sont la cosmologie, la psychologie et la théologie naturelle. Cet « aboutissement » – que l’on peut aussi concevoir comme un dépérissement et un délitement – est le fruit de siècles de réception et de décantation d’une science qui, cherchant à se constituer à partir de sa plus sûre origine, oscille constamment entre plusieurs centres de gravité et finit par quitter le champ des analogies au profit de l’univocité. Cette histoire a été racontée avec force détails et grande érudition. Notre étude cherche à ressaisir comment et sous quelles modalités la théologie est presque le « fantôme » de la métaphysique, hantant son questionnement et orientant ses directions, en dépit des résistances les plus tenaces et apparemment les plus décisives, comme celles que Kant fit valoir dans la Critique de la raison pure. |

| Summary, etc. | Is There a History of Metaphysics? was the title of a book published by the Presses universitaires de France in 2005, jointly edited by Yves Charles Zarka and Bruno Pinchard. The interrogative nature of the title reveals a history of the genealogies of this science that, in its denominative noun form, was constituted only in the modern period, when, precisely, the possible plurality of its names seemed to dissipate and be exhausted, in favor of a firm delimitation of its general formal object (ens in communi or ens in quantum ens) and of its special object, when this science was divided according to the three disciplines that are cosmology, psychology, and natural theology. This “completion” – which can also be conceived of as a decline and a disintegration – is the fruit of centuries of receiving and decanting a science that, seeking to constitute itself on the basis of its surest origin, constantly oscillates between several centers of gravity and finally abandons the field of analogies in favor of univocity. This history has been recounted with many details and with great erudition. My study seeks to grasp again how and in what modalities theology is almost the “ghost” of metaphysics, haunting its questioning and orienting its directions, despite the most tenacious, and apparently the most decisive, resistances, such as those that Kant set forth in the Critique of Pure Reason. |
