| Summary, etc. | RésuméPlus qu’aucun autre genre littéraire, le théâtre est directement concerné par le changement culturel qui, selon Foucault, témoigne de la forme monotone et triste de la maladie mentale face à la sauvagerie fascinante de la folie. Que seraient devenus Hamlet et Lear s’ils n’avaient pas été fous, mais malades mentaux, ainsi que Janet l’établit pour Raymond Roussel ? Le théâtre n’aurait-il pas perdu l’opportunité d’analyser sa propre nature, basée sur plus ou moins de prétexte au contrôle et sur la part d’aliénation de l’acteur en lui-même ? Si quelques dramaturges ont campé leurs personnages dans une maison de santé, ou soutenu les idées du mouvement de l’antipsychiatrie, le théâtre contemporain examine souvent les potentialités offertes par la nature humaine. Beaucoup de pièces retiennent l’une des fonctions que le drame shakesperien confère à la folie. Quelques œuvres portant témoignage de la complexité et dégageant les idées à propos du personnage du fou, rejettent le cercle vicieux qui veut que le comportement anormal signifie maladie mentale qui provoque l’internement. D’autres auteurs montrent la folie de la guerre mondiale, la torture, l’inhumanité de l’économie mondiale et établissent un lien entre la violence individuelle et la responsabilité collective. Pour Dürenmatt, Bernhard, Kane… la folie individuelle n’est qu’une vague copie de la folie qui affecte le monde. |

| Summary, etc. | More than any other literary genre, drama is directly concerned with the cultural change which, according to Foucault, has witnessed the appearance of the sad monotony of mental illness instead of the fascinating savagery of madness. What becomes of Hamlet and Lear if there are no more mad people but merely mentally ill people, the way Janet refers to Raymond Roussel ? Would drama not lose the opportunity to analyse its own nature, based on more or less controlled pretence, and on the actor’s alienation within his part ? If some dramatists put their characters inside a mental home, or uphold the ideas of the anti-psychiatric movement, contemporary drama often scrutinizes the potentialities offered by human hubris. Many plays retain one of the functions that Shakespearan drama conferred upon madness. Some works, bearing witness of the complexity and clear-headedness of the mad character, reject the vicious circle : « abnormal behaviour means mental illness which entails confinement ». Other writers highlight the madness of the world-war, torture, inhumanity of the world economy, and make a link between individual violence and collective responsibility. For Dürenmatt, Bernhard, Kane… individual madness is only a dim copy of the madness that affects the world. |
