| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’article s’intéresse aux formes et contenus de l’identification sur un « quartier » français quand on est issu de l’immigration maghrébine. Il les envisage « là où il y a les villas », ces lieux « calmes » occultés par les « cités » et leurs problèmes auxquels les « quartiers » sont généralement réduits. L’hypothèse étayée est que cette identification est le produit d’une histoire, aux étapes à chaque fois originales, où s’entrechoquent, s’apprivoisent et se conjuguent des codes culturels « d’ailleurs » et « d’ici ».Il s’appuie en priorité sur des entretiens biographiques avec une jeune femme, habitant « là où il y a les villas » et animatrice au centre social sur la « cité » à proximité où, auparavant, elle a vécu plusieurs années. Plus secondairement, il se réfère à un ensemble d’entretiens semi-directifs avec des habitants des deux espaces et des professionnels travaillant sur le second ainsi qu’à une observation directe auprès d’un groupe de jeunes garçons fréquentant régulièrement le centre social et ses abords immédiats.L’article montre que « là où il y a les villas », l’identification « ici » avec sa part « d’ailleurs » se noue à travers des pratiques aux ressorts divers en fonction des sphères de la vie sociale : faire « en apparence » et « en douce » pour éviter le choc frontal au sein de la famille, adopter sur les voisinages élargi et anonyme une manière flamboyante de se vêtir avec des marques afin d’exorciser la disqualification dont on se sent destinataire, bénéficier de l’atténuation significative de celle-ci sur le voisinage de proximité, à condition d’accepter la réserve le caractérisant.La recherche invite à retenir que « là où il y a les villas », l’identification est une fabrication en continu à travers laquelle il est possible de devenir « ici » sans devoir rejeter sa part « d’ailleurs ». |

| Summary, etc. | When « from elsewhere » and « from here » clash, come to terms and combineThe author examines the forms and contents of identification in a French neighbourhood when a person is a North African immigrant. She studies these aspects « over there where people live in houses », these « calm » places hidden by the « Projects » and their problems, with which these immigrant neighbourhoods are identified. She hypothesizes that this identification is the product of a specific history – each stage of it being new – in which cultural codes « from here » and « from there » clash, come to terms and combine.The research is based first on biographical interviews with a young woman residing « over there where people live in houses » and employed as a social worker in the community center of the adjacent poorer neighbourhood in which she lived for several years. It also uses several open interviews with residents from both places and with employees working in the poorer area, as well as direct observation of a group of young boys who regularly visit the community center and its surroundings.It is shown that, « over there where people live in houses », residents’ identification with « here » joins with « there » through different practices depending on various social components : acting « as if » and « unobtrusively » in order to avoid conflict within the family, flamboyantly dressing in well-known brand names when in one’s broader surroundings and in the anonymous beyond so as to avoid feeling disqualified, and feeling less so in one’s closest surroundings if one shows more discretion.The author concludes that « over there where people live in houses » identification is continuously constructed, making it possible to be « from here » without totally rejecting one’s element from « elsewhere ». |
