| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe lexique relatif à la banlieue française et aux quartiers est paradoxal : pauvre si l’on s’en tient aux apparences, d’une grande richesse quand on remonte aux racines de l’histoire urbaine. En étant considérée comme un sujet d’opinion avant d’être analysée comme un objet scientifique, la banlieue contemporaine porte en France une charge qui la dépasse. Une série de slogans et de discours simplistes alimente à son sujet une construction cumulative où chaque organe d’information, en se calquant sur son concurrent, contribue à produire des figures imaginaires.En dépit de l’enclavement spatial et de la précarité sociale qui concernent de nombreux quartiers sensibles et leur population, l’emploi même du mot « ghetto » à leur propos est inapproprié. Ce terme fige une situation qui est en mouvement. Il occulte les processus externes qui conduisent à la relégation. Il s’inscrit dans un système de représentations qui amalgame misère sociale, terreur et communautarisme. En somme, il ne fait que renforcer une situation qu’il convient de dénoncer.Précisément cet article revient sur les définitions de la banlieue, du quartier et du ghetto. Il s’agit de montrer toutes les ambiguïtés du vocabulaire, de souligner comment ces notions se transforment dans le temps, et de mettre en évidence le rôle de la rumeur et le poids des représentations qui sont véhiculées par l’emploi de ces mots dans des contextes particuliers. |

| Summary, etc. | Neighbourhood, ghetto : the ambiguity of definitions, representations and misrepresentationsThe vocabulary relating to French suburbs and neighbourhoods is paradoxical ; in appearance alone they are poor but if we trace back to the roots of urban history, there is great richness. In France, the image of present-day suburbs is loaded with preconceived ideas rather than evidence-based data. A string of slogans and simplistic arguments perpetuate a cumulative notion where each news story competes to bolster a false picture.In spite of the hemmed-in aspect and high unemployment which characterise many deprived neighbourhoods and their populations, the use of the word « ghetto » is inappropriate. This word fixes a situation which is in flux. It masks external factors which lead to exclusion. It fits in with a system of representation which combines poverty, terror and ethnic clannishness. In short, it simply reinforces a situation which it would be right to decry.This article intends precisely to take another look at definitions of the terms « suburb », « neighbourhood » and « ghetto ». It aims to show the ambiguities of vocabulary, to highlight how these ideas change over time, and to point up the role of rumour and hearsay and the weight of misrepresentations which are carried by the use of these words in specific contexts. |
