520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. « Minority » laughter and renunciation of the research object We attempt here to account for the laughter that punctuated our talk with an illiterate couple being interviewed on their social success. The paper presents two surprises and two discoveries : 1) analyzing the mechanisms of laughter requires giving precedence not to language itself, which is the stuff witticisms are made of, but to what one “sees”, i.e. a scene in which the third person is necessarily present for the situation to become a comedy ; yet language boomerangs in an ultimate coup de théâtre; 2) knowing the interviewees personally, we were sure we understood until a discussion with a colleague showed us later that we had misinterpreted the facts : the ethnological approach forces researchers to get off their high horse, to give up the mastery borrowed from the natural sciences that usually defines their relationship with their « object » : the idea is to account for that renunciation.
