| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe Musée ethnographique de Stockholm et le Musée des cultures du monde de Göteborg possèdent près de 18 000 objets « exotiques ». La plupart de ces objets ont été acquis par les missionnaires et les officiers suédois qui travaillaient dans l’État indépendant du Congo (1885-1908), la colonie belge à la réputation sulfureuse du roi Léopold II (1885-1909). L’auteur n’envisage pas ces collections comme autant de témoignages de la culture matérielle congolaise, mais comme autant de traces d’une histoire culturelle suédoise restée trop longtemps inconnue, et qui s’exprime en fait dans ces objets. L’auteur analyse en effet en ethnologue la façon dont ces objets ont été choisis, réunis, chargés de fonctions et surtout de significations nouvelles. |

| Summary, etc. | In the vaults of the Swedish national ethnographic museums, in Stockholm and Gothenburg, approximately 18 000 objects, from areas within the boundaries of today’s two states of Congo, are housed today. Most of them were acquired by missionaries and military officers active within the Congo Free State (1885-1909), the badly reputed private colony of the former Belgian king, Leopold II. The author approaches these collections, not as tokens of Congolese material culture, but as traces of a, for long rather forgotten, Swedish cultural history and as expressions of western material genres. Through case studies of a selection of collections, created by Swedish men and women with differing roles in the colonial process, the paper focusses on the ways in which objects have been selected, joined and charged with new functions and significances. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungIm Ethnographischen Museum in Stockholm und im Weltkulturmuseum in Göteborg befinden sich ungefähr 18 000 Objekte die heute den beiden kongolesischen Staaten gehören. Die meisten dieser Objekte stammen von Missionaren und schwedischen Offizieren, die im unabhängigen Staat Kongo (1885-1908) – einer privaten und verrufenen Kolonie Leopold II von Belgien – arbeiteten. Als Ethnologe betrachtet der Autor diese Sammlungen nicht als materielle kongolesische Kultur, sondern als Spur schwedischer Geschichte, die zu lange Zeit unbekannt war sowie als Ausdruck westlicher materieller Kunst. Die verschiedenen Sammlungen, von Männern und Frauen mit unterschiedlichen Rollen innerhalb des Kolonialisierungsprozesses zusammengestellt, zeigen deutlich die Art und Weise nach der die Objekte ausgewählt und mit neuen Funktionen und Bedeutungen bedacht wurden. |
