| Summary, etc. | Dans le roman de Nabokov, il est bien rare de trouver une page ne contenant aucun mot français ou une référence à la culture française. Rien de surprenant lorsqu'on sait que le narrateur, Humbert Humbert, élevé sur la Riviera, est un homme de lettres d’origine française. Pourtant, Lolita est aussi le roman le plus « américain » de Nabokov. La deuxième partie, que Nabokov écrivit alors qu'il parcourait l'ouest américain à la recherche de papillons, est un hommage à la vie et aux paysages américains. Le roman ne cesse donc de mettre en regard les deux cultures. La langue française s'insinue constamment au cœur de la prose du narrateur, de son vocabulaire ou de sa syntaxe ; et les classiques de la littérature française constituent les principaux intertextes du roman. Cet article s'interrogera donc sur la fonction de la langue et de la culture françaises dans Lolita. |

| Summary, etc. | In Nabokov’s Lolita, hardly a page goes by without a French word or a reference to French culture. Within the universe of the novel, this is not so surprising since Humbert Humbert, the narrator, was raised on the Riviera and is a semi-French belletrist. Yet Lolita is also Nabokov’s most “American” novel. The second part, which was composed during rainy days while Nabokov was hunting for butterflies in the American West, reads as an homage to American life and landscapes. In Lolita, French and American culture constantly intermix and clash with each other. French infiltrates not only the narrator’s vocabulary but also his syntax, whereas French classics constitute the main intertexts in the novel. This article thus aims at assessing the function of French language and culture in Lolita. |
