| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | What was the role played by the religious vote in the November 4th, 2008 presidential election ? After two rounds of elections where the religious voice seemed firmly and almost exclusively positioned with the Republican Party, this campaign has brought change, and also possibilities for more change in the future. The Democratic Party has opened up to progressive religious voters and religious rhetoric, carried forward by a leading candidate (Barack Obama) not afraid to talk personally about the role faith plays in his life and in his commitment to social justice. By contrast, the traditional alliance between conservative religious voters and Republicans seemed weakened, with McCain’s failure to talk convincingly about the role faith plays in his life, coupled with the relative silence around so-called “moral” values during the campaign. The promotion of new issues at the top of the political agenda, such as the devastating financial crisis, and the rising concerns about energy supplies, are bringing with them new questions about the political alignment of religious constituencies. |
