| Summary, etc. | Le pragmatisme, courant majeur de la philosophie américaine depuis des décennies, oscille entre deux tendances : la première est incarnée par Richard Rorty et ses épigones selon lesquels la réalité n'a d'existence qu'au travers de son expression linguistique ; la seconde par Hilary Putnam, chantre du " réalisme externe ", principe selon lequel il existe bien un réel au-delà du signifiant. Ces deux possibilités reprennent plus ou moins le credo nominaliste, mais Putnam nous aide à envisager comment, en dépit du caractère forcément arbitraire du lien unissant signe et référent, nous pouvons appréhender des textes qui nous parlent, par exemple, de la nature tout en utilisant notre bagage empirique. Cependant, cette approche n'est possible, selon Putnam, qu'à condition d'être " charitable ", c'est-à-dire de faire preuve, dans certains cas, de souplesse sémantique. En dernier lieu, faire référence aux attributs de la nature par le biais des mots peut seulement être réalisé si l'auteur partage avec ses lecteurs un fonds référentiel et culturel commun, tout en gardant à l'esprit que ce contexte idéal n'est jamais facile à atteindre. |

| Summary, etc. | Pragmatism, which has been America’s prevailing philosophical movement for decades, still wavers between two options : one is embodied by Richard Rorty and those who, like him, believe that there is no reality outside the realm of words, and the other by Hilary Putnam, who believes in some kind of “external realism”, a reality independent of our linguistic tools. Both options more or less fit the nominalist creed, but Putnam’s helps us see how, in spite of the arbitrariness of references to the natural world, we still might be able to read texts about nature without entirely losing touch with our empirical experiences. However, this option revolves around our willingness to show what Putnam calls “charity”. In the final analysis, pointing at nature’s attributes by means of words can be achieved only if you share a strict semantic background, a common acculturation, with your readers, which, as we all know, can turn out to be problematic. |
