520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Left-wing scholar Howard Zinn (1922-2010) emerged as a public figure through his involvement in the social movements of the 1960s. Following the publication of his bestseller book A People’s History of the United States from 1492 to the Present (1980), he rose to prominence as a representative of “history from below.” The historiographical and political controversies triggered by his work have served as manifestations of his influential status as a public intellectual. His passing in January 2010 interrupted a long trajectory which bridged several generations of activism. His own life story sheds light on political traditions and milieus which took shape before the intellectual destructuring due to Maccarthyism. In this recent interview, he is asked about his understanding of progressivism in the context of the 2008 presidential elections. Drawing on his personal experience, Zinn reflects upon the fluid nature of the ideology of progressivism.
