À l’ère du cyberespace, de l’image et du son, les envois postaux (colis, correspondance, livres et périodiques) gérés par la Poste (et les Douanes) ont conservé leur importance. Ils permettent à l’État diverses formes de contrôle, dont la surveillance, légale et illégale, fait partie. Des sociétés privées s’y intéressent aussi de plus en plus, dans un but commercial. Entre mœurs et politique, les véritables enjeux du contrôle, parmi lesquels l’obscénité occupe une place importante, ne sont pas toujours ce qu’il semble. La lecture, l’interprétation de textes et de signes multiples sont ses outils. |

| Summary, etc. | The postal service is being gradually privatized in the U.S., but the federal government insists on preserving its power over this mode of communication. In the age of cyberspace, image and sound, regular mail through the Postal Service and Customs (packages, private correspondence, books and periodicals) still matters to the government. On the one hand, it enables the government to exert several forms of control, including legal and illegal surveillance, on the other, it is attractive to private companies for commercial purposes. What is at stake in this control, which involves mores and politics, and in which obscenity occupies a prominent place, is not always what it seems. Reading and interpreting a multitude of texts and signs are its tools. |
