| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | At a time when he still described himself as an analytical philosopher, the young Rorty wrote an article in which he suggested a parallel between Peirce and Wittgenstein, on the ground that they both attack the reductionist outlook in philosophy : these two thinkers refuse to assume that meaning has well-defined boundaries, proclaiming instead that its vagueness is constitutive and cannot be eliminated. According to Peirce, all meaning is future-oriented and indeterminate, as the significance of a notional term is identical to the sum of the practical effects associated with its use, a basic principle of pragmatism. As to Wittgenstein, he combats reductionism by insisting that all meaning is open-ended, being identical to the actual uses of words. Both writers thus oppose one of the major modes of philosophical reductionism. |
