| Summary, etc. | Les attitudes des Amérindiens vis-à-vis de l’environnement ne peuvent pas être simplifiées et représentées par la figure de l’Indien Ecologique. À une époque où les peurs environnementales se font de plus en plus présentes et où l’humanité semble ne pas vraiment savoir comment se confronter aux dangers qu’elle pose à son environnement, cet article propose un aperçu des raisons avancées par des auteurs amérindiens pour expliquer la destruction de l’environnement. Pour certains auteurs, c’est la peur de l’environnement naturel qui pousse les hommes à s’éloigner de celui-ci et à le détruire. Pour mettre un terme à ces destructions, et pour se sauver eux-mêmes, les êtres humains doivent redevenir conscients de ce qui les lie à la terre, ce qui implique notamment de ne pas considérer la Nature comme un sanctuaire dans lequel l’humanité n’aurait pas sa place. |

| Summary, etc. | Native American attitudes regarding the environment should not be represented simplistically by the figure of the Ecological Indian. At a time when environmental fears are more and more widespread and when societies are at a loss when confronting the dangers of human impact on nature, the issue can be addressed by paying attention to the way Native American authors make sense of environmental destruction. Some authors argue that it is human fears of the environment which cause humanity to forget its very connection to and reliance upon it. In order to end the destruction of nature—and ultimately to save mankind—human beings need to recover their symbiotic relationship to the earth. This implies regarding the wilderness—which some call a European invention—as something other than a sanctuary in which humanity would have no place. |
