Summary, etc. Résumé Cet article vise à retracer les enjeux d’une pensée postcoloniale évolutive et à examiner la généalogie des études postcoloniales qui résultent en partie d’échanges intellectuels et de transactions-réinventions entre les deux rives de l’Atlantique. Les deux temps forts de cet échange sont, à partir des années 1970, l’exportation d’une pensée dite poststructuraliste élaborée en France et sa germination dans les universités américaines puis le rapatriement hexagonal de ce courant de pensée sous l’appellation « théorie postcoloniale ». Cet aller-retour a suscité en France des malentendus révélateurs de certaines crispations disciplinaires et identitaires. La « question » postcoloniale ayant été médiatisée avec la polémique aux alentours de 2005, et s’étant imposée dans le débat public non sans une confusion terminologique lourde de malentendus, la critique postcoloniale, dans sa forme politique et surtout mémorielle, a pris le pas sur la théorie postcoloniale et sur l’analyse des discours. La méfiance qui règne vis-à-vis d’un courant de pensée qui semble faire entrer certaines disciplines dans une ère du soupçon déstabilisante traduit un malaise spécifiquement français par rapport au brouillage des frontières disciplinaires. Elle révèle également une certaine difficulté républicaine à penser l’articulation entre identités et altérités, à renoncer à un « récit national » du passé colonial, à faire dialoguer mémoires et histoires divergentes, à distinguer entre mémoire et histoire. Ainsi, malgré l’émergence d’un véritable débat postcolonial français et francophone, le décentrement que traduisent et qu’accomplissent les études postcoloniales est encore à venir en France. Leur puissance de perturbation, d’ébranlement et de renouvellement semble en tout cas intacte.

Summary, etc. This article aims to explore the questions at stake in an evolving postcolonial discourse, and examine how the genealogy of Postcolonial Studies partly results from intellectual exchanges and transactions/reinventions between the two sides of the Atlantic. The two key phases of this exchange are, from the 1970s onwards, the exportation of poststructuralist thinking that developed in France and germinated in American universities, and subsequently, the move back to France of this trend of thought under the name of “postcolonial theory.” In France, this postcolonial feedback has been a source of misunderstandings and destabilization that reveal certain institutional, disciplinary and identity-related tensions. Because the postcolonial question has been conspicuously and polemically present since 2005, with the term “postcolonial” itself being often very loosely defined, postcolonial critique, in its political and above all commemorative dimensions, has supplanted postcolonial theory and discourse analysis. Postcolonial theory has too often been equated with threatening communal identity politics. The distrust of a trend of thought that seems to usher disciplines into a destabilizing “age of suspicion” also reveals a certain French discomfort with inter-disciplinarity. It sheds light on France’s reluctance to give up a national and metropolitan narrative of its colonial past, on the republican difficulty in dealing with divergent histories and conflicting memories, and on the blind spots of that history. Despite the recent emergence of a genuine French and francophone postcolonial debate, the shift in perspective that postcolonial studies can effectively perform is yet to unfold in France. Their power to challenge, alter and renew disciplines, institutions, discourses or national paradigms seems at any rate untouched.
